Islam is the state religion and most dominant religion of Malaysia. About 58 percent of the total population of Malaysia practice Islam. In fact, most of the followers of Islam are Malays. Owing to the strong relationship the country shares with China, about 27 percent of the people of Malaysia are the followers of Buddhism. About 8% of the population is Hindu. Hinduism is mainly practiced by the Indian population residing in the country. Other religions like Christianity, Daoism, Confucianism and Sikhism consist of approximately 9 percent of the entire population. Christianity has made a larger impact upon East Malaysia in comparison to Peninsular Malaysia. Many indigenous people in East Malaysia have adapted Christianity as their religion.
In spite of a predominant Islamic population, status of religious freedom or freedom to practice any religion has been guaranteed by the constitution of the country. This has affected the society at large, reflecting the racial diversity that prevails in the country. Thus, Malaysia religions play a very significant part in the lifestyle of the populace. There are numerous mosques, shrines, churches and temples all over Malaysia.
